Too good to last: We were quick to praise Quicken.com's 401(k) Advisor for going beyond calculators and boilerplate to offer investors free access to financial planners and tailor-made tips. More than one million visitors visited the site since it went to live in January 2000 for advice on how to make the most of their retirement plans.

But not nearly enough of those people upgraded from the freebie to a $19.95-a-month deal to monitor their plans. So Quicken recently pulled the plug on instant-messaging and phone advice. The site still contains solid basic retirement-planning information.
